Nestled in the food court, this branch offers the signature Din Tai Fung experience—consistently delicious and comforting, though not without its quirks compared to other locations I’ve visited.

This visit marks my fourth country dining at Din Tai Fung (Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and now Malaysia). Each branch has its unique characteristics while retaining the chain’s commitment to quality, making it a dependable choice for Xiao Long Bao lovers worldwide.

The Food

  • Xiao Long Bao with Truffles: Unlike the Bangkok branch, this location offers the luxurious Xiao Long Bao with truffles, a welcome addition to the menu. These delicate soup dumplings burst with flavor, a must-try for anyone visiting.

  • Lava Dim Sum (Custard Eggs): This was my first time trying the Lava Dim Sum, and it was a revelation. Warm, rich, and indulgent, they’ve quickly become a staple in my Din Tai Fung visits.

  • Oriental Salad: The starter selection here is limited, with only the Oriental Salad available. While it’s fresh and tangy, I missed the variety of appetizers offered at other locations.

  • Mango Pudding: A bit too firm for my liking, the mango pudding was the only slight miss in an otherwise excellent meal.

As always, Din Tai Fung delivers a consistently tasty experience. While the Pavilion KL branch doesn’t quite match the depth of offerings or the legendary quality of its Taiwanese counterpart, it remains a safe and satisfying choice for dumpling lovers.

A Disappointing Experience at Anaconda – Latino Nikkei Bar, Bangkok

The Anaconda in Bangkok had all the ingredients for success: a stylish setting, an open kitchen concept where guests can watch the chefs at work, and a promising menu blending Latin and Japanese influences. Unfortunately, my visit fell far short of expectations, leaving me with one of the most disappointing dining experiences I’ve ever had in the city.

The Concept and Atmosphere

The restaurant’s design is undeniably chic, with seating arranged around the chefs, giving diners a front-row view of the action. Normally, this interactive setup would be a highlight. However, in this case, it tragically showcased the team’s lack of competence, turning what should have been a spectacle into a display of amateurish preparation and poor execution.

The Food: High Hopes, Low Results

Here’s a breakdown of the dishes I tried:

  • Sashimi: Watching the sashimi being prepared was a painful experience. The fish was rearranged countless times, with small pieces cut off repeatedly. By the time it reached my plate, the fish was lukewarm and watery, despite its visually stunning presentation.

  • Foie Gras Custard Egg: This dish was another letdown. The custard was gritty and lacked flavor, while the small foie gras pieces were overcooked to oblivion, robbing them of their rich, buttery essence.

  • Ox Heart: Grilled to the limit, the ox heart lacked tenderness and balance. The accompanying mushrooms were drowned in a marinade that overpowered their natural flavor.

  • Spicy Toro Maki: A rare highlight of the meal, the toro maki delivered on flavor and spice, though it’s hard to credit the kitchen given the overall inconsistency.

  • Dajingo Sake: The sake was excellent, but of course, that had nothing to do with the restaurant itself.

Service: More Party Than Professional

The service was another glaring issue. Staff appeared more interested in socializing and laughing loudly than attending to diners. The lack of professionalism was evident throughout the evening, leaving a sour note on an already disappointing meal.

Final Thoughts

For a restaurant that markets itself as a high-end dining experience, The Anaconda failed to deliver on every level except ambiance. While it’s a newly opened venue, the glaring issues in food preparation, service, and overall quality management suggest it has a long way to go before it lives up to its promise.

Sometimes it’s wise to wait for a few reviews before visiting a new spot—and I hope this review helps others avoid a similar flop. Bangkok has too many incredible dining options to waste time and money on mediocrity like this.

Booking a table at Kagges via BokaBoard was essential, and I’m glad I secured a seat at the bar. Sitting at the bar was a highlight of the evening, offering a front-row view of the chefs meticulously crafting each dish. The open kitchen concept added an extra layer of excitement to the meal.

The Menu: Top 4 with Wine Pairing

To keep things simple, I opted for the Top 4 menu with wine pairing, and it didn’t disappoint:

  • Course 1: The evening began with an orange wine, a bold and unconventional choice that brought back memories of past experiences at Canvas in Bangkok. While orange wines can be polarizing, this one was balanced and enjoyable.

For dessert, I indulged in Blum pudding with plums and Blum sorbet, a delightful combination of rich and tangy flavors that ended the meal on a high note.

Atmosphere & Connection

Beyond the food, what made the evening special was the atmosphere. While enjoying my meal, I struck up a conversation with a fellow diner—a digital nomad from Ukraine living in Singapore. We exchanged stories, apps, and experiences, adding a personal and memorable dimension to the evening.

While they suggested I quickly grab a pair of long pants from a nearby shop, it wasn’t ideal in Bangkok’s heat. Lesson learned: now I always arrive prepared, and since I often reserve via their app, they seem to remember me, which adds a nice personal touch.

The Food

Paste’s menu is a celebration of Thai flavors, combining traditional techniques with a contemporary twist. While heading to the popular Here Hai (thanks, TikTok!), I was met with a line that was far too long for my patience. On my way back to the BTS, I stumbled upon Fujiyama55 and decided to satisfy my ramen cravings instead—and I’m glad I did.

The Meal

I ordered their signature ramen and a side of gyoza. While I initially wanted to pair the meal with a Kirin, Thailand’s alcohol restrictions (no beer served between 2 PM and 5 PM) meant I settled for my trusty green tea—the same one I always grab at 7-11.

  • The Ramen:
    The ramen was outstanding. The broth was incredibly rich and thick—so much so that kettles of hot water were placed on the table for diners to dilute it. I didn’t bother; I loved the intense flavor just as it was. The noodles were perfectly cooked with a delightful bite, and the toppings were generous and flavorful.

  • The Gyoza:
    The gyoza were just as impressive. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, they hit all the right notes. A dash of chili oil would have elevated them further, but they were delicious even without it.

Ramen Showdown: Fujiyama55 vs. Tsuta

Having recently tried Tsuta at Central World, I couldn’t help but compare the two. However, it’s a tough call since their broths are entirely different. Tsuta’s lighter, more refined flavors contrast Fujiyama55’s bold and hearty approach. In the end, I’d call it a draw—both deliver incredible ramen experiences in their own unique ways.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in Ekamai and craving ramen, Fujiyama55 is a fantastic choice. With its rich broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and excellent gyoza, it’s a place I’d happily return to. Sometimes, detours lead to the best discoveries!

A Hidden Gem for Pizza Lovers: Pizzeria Dante, Kaštel Novi

Located near Split, Pizzeria Dante in Kaštel Novi is a surprising find for any pizza enthusiast. Despite being initially skeptical about dining out after making pizza at home in my own oven, the pictures and glowing reviews convinced me to give it a try. Spoiler: it was worth it!

First Visit

I arrived around 6 PM and was surprised to find the restaurant almost empty, while other spots by the harbor were buzzing. Regardless, I went in, and I’m glad I did. The service was warm and welcoming, with staff speaking excellent English.

I ordered the Pizza Losa (with salmon and burrata), a Greek farmer’s salad, and the house red wine. The pizza was exceptional—exactly how I like it. A thin base, thick and airy crust, baked perfectly crispy, and just the right golden hue (none of that undercooked look!). The flavors were spot on, and the burrata added a creamy finish to the salmon topping.

The Greek farmer’s salad was fresh, but the black olives were the only letdown—they tasted artificially blackened and lacked the rich flavor that good olives should have.

Second Visit

The pizza on my first visit was so good that I had to return. This time, I tried a pizza without tomatoes, topped with ham and truffle oil. It was a revelation—proof that great pizza doesn’t always need a tomato base. The combination was flavorful and satisfying.

Third Visit

On my third trip, I couldn’t resist ordering the Mortadella Pizza with Burrata. It was just as delicious as the others, with the burrata balancing the richness of the mortadella perfectly.

Final Thoughts

Pizzeria Dante might not draw a crowd like the bustling harbor restaurants, but it more than makes up for it with its fantastic pizza and friendly service. If you appreciate a crispy crust, thoughtful toppings, and a cozy atmosphere, this spot is a must-visit near Split.
