Hidden Culinary Gem: Katsura Bangkok Cutlet Bar, Langsuan

Tucked away in a quiet back courtyard, Katsura Bangkok Cutlet Bar offers a refined take on Katsudon, breaded pork cutlets that are far from the typical Schnitzel. This restaurant was high on my bucket list for its reputation and unique offerings, and while the experience wasn’t without its quirks, it was definitely worth the visit.

Atmosphere and Location

Finding Katsura feels like uncovering a secret, as it’s nestled in a tucked-away courtyard. The cozy and minimalistic ambiance is inviting, though its growing popularity means the restaurant fills up quickly—so expect waiting times during peak hours. There’s a bench downstairs at the entrance for those waiting to be seated.

The Food

  • Starter: I began with a mackerel salad, and it was a great choice. The fresh fish paired perfectly with the standout sesame dressing, which added a nutty richness to the salad.

  • Main Course: For the main dish, I opted for the Katsu with Truffles, served alongside green tea. The cutlet was beautifully breaded and cooked to perfection, offering a crisp exterior with tender meat inside. However, the truffle oil and paste were a bit overpowering, masking some of the natural flavors of the pork. In hindsight, I’d recommend a simpler version to better appreciate the quality of the Katsu.

  • Drinks: Unfortunately, due to a public holiday, sake wasn’t available, but the green tea complemented the meal nicely.

Service

The service was smooth and efficient, keeping up with the growing crowd. The staff was attentive and accommodating, ensuring a pleasant dining experience.

Final Thoughts

Katsura Bangkok Cutlet Bar is a must-visit for fans of Japanese cuisine, especially those eager to try authentic Katsu dishes. While the truffle version didn’t hit the mark for me due to its overpowering flavors, the quality of the food and the excellent starter left a great impression. If you plan to visit, I recommend arriving early or being prepared for a wait during peak hours.
